E3 2014 dated following record 2013 attendance

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced a record attendance figure for E3 2013 and dated next year's show.

48,200 game industry professionals, analysts, journalists and retailers from 102 countries visited the LA Convention Centrer this week for gaming's largest annual event, which will be held in the same venue next year from June 10-12.

E3 2013's attendance figure surpassed the previous record of 45,700 set last year.

Around 230 exhibitors showcased their gaming wares at the event, which the ESA said generated almost $40 million in revenue for LA.

ESA CEO Michael Gallagher commented: "This year's E3 showcased the best that our industry has to offer and channeled the immense energy, drive, and enthusiasm for video games onto a global stage.

"Thanks to our members and exhibitors' boundless capacity for innovation, billions of consumers are seeing the future of our industry through this outstanding landscape of creativity, technology and content."

UK Chart: The Last of Us beats Animal Crossing to No.1

The Last of Us outsold fellow new release Animal Crossing: New Leaf to debut atop the UK all formats all prices chart for the week ended June 15.

Zoom

Naughty Dog's PS3 exclusive is Sony's first all formats No.1 since Uncharted: Golden Abyss on Vita back in week eight of 2012, Chart-Track reports.

It's also the third fastest-selling game of 2013 behind Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite, and the biggest launch for a new IP since LA Noire in week 20 of 2011.

3DS exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf recorded the biggest launch on the portable since December 2011's Mario Kart 7 and the best ever for a non-Mario title.

Outside of the top ten, Rugby Challenge 2: The Lions Tour Edition was a new entry at No.12.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (previous week):

We said in our The Last of Us review: "The Last of Us is a remarkable achievement, and one of those rare games that you never want to end as you approach the finale. It tells a moving story that will linger in your mind long after the credits have rolled, but never loses sight of the fact that it's a video game, not a film. It's a masterful marriage of storytelling and game design, and easily Naughty Dog's finest moment."

In our Animal Crossing: New Leaf review we said the game is "an essential purchase for 3DS owners needing to unwind" and "a game you'll always make sure to have on you".

Ubisoft making Watch Dogs, Far Cry and Rabbids movies

Ubisoft's film division intends to make movies based on the Watch Dogs, Far Cry and Rabbids franchises.

Zoom

The company already has Hollywood adaptations of three of its major franchises in the works: Michael Fassbender will star in and co-produce the big screen version of Assassin's Creed, Tom Hardy will play Sam Fisher in a Splinter Cell film, while Michael Bay is to develop Ghost Recon into a potential movie franchise for Warner Bros.

As with those projects, Ubisoft will retain creative control of the Watch Dogs, Far Cry and Rabbids films, hiring the screenwriters, directors and cast, Variety reports.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet said the company is treating the movies as standalone titles with new stories rather than as game adaptations.

He added: "Not every game will make a good movie, and for others it may be too early to turn into a movie."

Ubisoft isn't the only games publisher bringing its major properties to the big screen. World of Warcraft, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank films are also in the pipeline.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said last week that the company has three Assassin's Creed games in development and that each one will deliver different gameplay and innovations.

He also stated that the company will no longer make Wii U exclusive games until Nintendo sells more systems.

PlayStation Network maintenance this Tuesday

PlayStation Network maintenance has been scheduled for this Tuesday June 25.

Zoom

Sony says the "routine" maintenance will run from approximately 5.30pm BST / 6.30pm CET until around midnight BST / 1.00am CET.

The PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and Account Management will be unavailable during the maintenance period.

Users may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access PSN, but will be able to access online play and apps provided they've signed in prior to the beginning of the maintenance period.

Last week, Sony released and subsequently pulled PS3 firmware update 4.45 after it was found to be causing errors in what the platform holder termed a "small number" of consoles.

It later said: "A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding and we apologise for the inconvenience."

Firmware update 4.45 was designed to allow users to switch trophy notifications off via the System Settings menu and improve general performance.

Sony has applied for certification of two new PS3 models, suggesting revised versions of its current-gen console are in the works.

The company recently said it has no current plans to introduce a PS3 price cut, despite the fact that PS4 will be available this Christmas.
